Ferrous Metal Fabrication
LOW COST, HIGH STRENGTH, ABUNDANT METALLIC MATERIAL
IRON & STEEL FABRICATORS
SERVING SWINDON & THE SOUTH WEST
Broadly speaking metals are divided into two categories – ferrous and non-ferrous. As experienced metal fabricators in Swindon, Wiltshire, we work with both varieties, designing and creating a wide range of metal products for different applications, from decorative and structural to utilitarian and industrial.
Ferrous metals are all those metallic materials that contain iron – the word ferrous comes from the Latin word for iron, ferrum. This includes the ever-popular metals we commonly work with: steel, carbon steel, cast iron and wrought iron. Non-ferrous metals are materials like aluminium, brass, copper, lead, zinc and tin.
Ferrous metals are widely available, cost-effective and renowned for their tensile strength and durability, which is why they are favoured by the construction industry for engineering everything from bridges to skyscrapers.
Here at R & P Engineering we are well-equipped with skilled staff and the latest technology to fabricate ferrous metals into any size or shape, to fulfil any function you wish, whether it be wrought iron railings, shipping containers or stainless steel counter tops.
WORKING FERROUS METALS
WHAT IT TAKES TO ACHIEVE PERFECTION
One of the best things about ferrous metal is that it is extremely recyclable – in fact nearly all of the steel scrap produced in the world is recycled for re-use, over and over again, which is music to our ears here at R & P Engineering, where we are extremely environmentally aware.
When it comes to working ferrous metals there are various challenges posed by their characteristics. For instance, they are extremely hard, heavy, prone to rusting and magnetic – all factors that must be considered when deciding what use to put them to and how best to work with them.
Most ferrous metals have their properties adapted by the addition of various alloys, and experts like us are knowledgeable about the attributes of each type of alloy as regards the metal’s toughness, ductility, weldability, elasticity, and thermal expansion. This means we are able to advise you on the best type of alloy to use for specific purposes.
Fabricating ferrous metals takes a great deal of precision, patience and determination – that’s besides machinery, tools, skills and experience. Our team in Swindon have what it takes to achieve perfection.
FERROUS METAL PROCESSES
EXCITING & CREATIVE FABRICATION SERVICES
We fabricate all sorts of items from ferrous metal and ferrous metal alloys in our Swindon workshop, starting with metal sheets, rods or other forms in which the material is supplied, and utilising a full range of processes, methods and approaches, depending on the desired result.
Making wrought iron railings, for example, requires consistent hitting and shaping of the glowing hot metal and the use of forge welding techniques – craftsmanship rather than machine-made.
Fabricating stainless steel tubular frames for a medical application, however, requires the use of jigs and a high level of welding expertise, with no margin for error.
Ferrous metal fabrication is an exciting and creative enterprise which we are pleased and proud to offer to our customers along the M4 corridor, including Oxford, Bath and the Avon area. We are also the local Swindon specialists for decorative metalwork, bespoke metalwork, architectural metalwork, steel safety barriers, industrial metalwork , precision engineering, metal fabrication, structural metalwork, and steel coating.
